Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW):
  • Also known as stick welding, this process uses electric current to create an arc between the base material and a consumable electrode rod. Ideal for welding ferrous materials, SMAW is protected from oxidation and contamination by flux, which produces CO₂ gas during the welding process.

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW):
  • Known as MIG welding, this semi-automatic or automatic process uses a continuous wire feed as an electrode and an inert or semi-inert gas mixture to protect the weld from contamination. Suitable for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, GMAW offers higher welding speeds than SMAW.

Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW):
  • Similar to GMAW, FCAW utilizes a steel electrode with a powder fill material. Although more expensive, this process allows for higher welding speeds and greater metal penetration, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW):
  • Also known as TIG welding, this manual process uses a tungsten electrode, inert or semi-inert gas, and a separate filler material. GTAW is perfect for welding thin materials, providing a stable arc and high-quality welds, although it requires significant operator skill.

Spot Welding:
  • This resistance welding method joins overlapping metal sheets up to 3 mm thick using two electrodes that clamp and pass current through the sheets. Spot welding is efficient in energy use and minimizes workpiece deformation, suitable for certain applications on ferrous metals.
